Ingredients and Their Health Benefits

Creating these delicious and nutritious chicken burgers is a blast! Easy and quick, so no more fluff, let’s dive into the creation!

Chicken burgers on a plate

Chicken Breast: At the heart of our burger is the lean chicken breast, a high-quality protein source that’s low in fat but high in essential nutrients. Protein is crucial for muscle repair and growth, making this an excellent choice for those who lead an active lifestyle. Plus, chicken is a versatile protein that absorbs flavors well, ensuring our burger is not just healthy but also delicious.

Whole Grain Bagel: We opt for a whole grain bagel to hold all our tasty ingredients. Whole grains are a fantastic source of fiber, which helps to maintain a healthy digestive system and keep you feeling full longer. They also contain essential nutrients like B vitamins, iron, and magnesium.

Avocado: This creamy fruit is not only rich in healthy fats—particularly monounsaturated fat—but also packed with fiber, potassium, and vitamins C, E, and K. These nutrients are essential for heart health and skin vitality. The fats in avocado can help you absorb other fat-soluble vitamins, making our avocado yogurt sauce a treat for your taste buds and a nutritional powerhouse.

Greek Yogurt: Adding Greek yogurt to our sauce boosts the protein content while providing a creamy texture without the excess calories typically found in mayonnaise or other traditional burger sauces. Greek yogurt is also a great source of calcium and probiotics, which support bone health and digestive wellness.

Fresh Herbs and Spices (Coriander, Chili Pepper, Garlic): Coriander offers a fresh, citrusy kick and contains antioxidants that can benefit heart health and blood sugar levels. Chili peppers add not just heat but also capsaicin, which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Garlic not only enhances flavor but also offers significant immune-boosting effects.

Lettuce, Tomatoes, and Onions: These veggies add crunch, flavor, and a host of nutrients including vitamins A and C, potassium, and fiber. They’re low in calories but high in value, adding essential nutrients and texture to every bite without weighing down the burger.

Each ingredient in our Healthy Chicken Burger has been chosen for both its flavor and its health benefits, ensuring that every bite is as good for you as it is good for you. Now, let’s move on to putting all these wonderful ingredients together!

How to Make Chicken Burgers: Step-by-Step

Chicken burgers

Season and Prepare the Chicken

In a bowl, mix thinly sliced chicken breast with finely chopped coriander, finely diced chili pepper, minced garlic, lime juice, salt, and pepper. Add panko and egg whites and mix well all together.

Mix all together and form 4 equal chicken patties.

Cook the Chicken

Heat the skillet and add a little of olive oil. Start cooking two chicken patties at a time to give them enough room. Cook for 5-7 minutes on each side or until fully cooked and golden brown.

For a healthier option, arrange the chicken on a lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (390°F) for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the chicken is cooked through and the coating is crispy.

Prepare the Avocado-Yogurt Sauce

Combine avocado, Greek yogurt, lime juice, red chilies, and minced garlic in a bowl. Blend, or mash until smooth. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of water to achieve your desired consistency. Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper. Set aside in the refrigerator to chill and let the flavors meld.

Toast the Bagels

Toasting bagels

Lightly toast whole grain bagels to enhance their texture and flavor, preparing them to hold all the delicious burger components.

5. Assemble the Burgers

On the bottom half of each toasted bagel, layer fresh lettuce leaves, followed by sliced tomatoes, pickled gherkins, and sliced onions. Place a piece of cooked chicken on top of the veggies.

Generously spoon the chilled avocado-yogurt sauce over the chicken. Place the top half of the bagel to finish.

6. Serve

Delicious chicken burgers

Serve the burger immediately to enjoy while the chicken is warm and crispy, and the bagel is still slightly toasted. Pair with a side salad or your favorite healthy snack for a complete meal.

  • 5g Garlic, minced (about 1 clove)

  • 5g Chili pepper (about 1 pepper)

  • Toast the bagel lightly. Layer the bottom half with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle. Add the crispy chicken and top generously with avocado-yogurt sauce. Cover with the top half of the bagel.
  • Serve the burgers hot with side dishes like sweet potato fries or a salad for a twist on a classic meal.

  • Patties can be formed and frozen for up to 3 months

Customization Options

Chicken burgers

Looking to make these chicken burgers on your own? Customizing your meal is not just fun, it allows you to tailor flavors to exactly your liking and accommodate any dietary needs. Whether you’re aiming for something spicier, a gluten-free option, or adding more greens, here are some simple adjustments:

  • Go Gluten-Free: Swap out the panko breadcrumbs for a gluten-free alternative and use gluten-free bagels or buns to make your burgers celiac-friendly.
  • Vegan Variations: For a plant-based version, consider using mashed chickpeas or a premade vegan patty instead of chicken, and replace the egg white with a flaxseed meal mixture.
  • Boost the Heat: If you love a fiery kick, add extra diced chili peppers into the patty mix or include a spicy sauce on top.
  • Add Extra Toppings: Introduce new textures and flavors with additions like crispy bacon, a slice of melty cheese, or even a fried egg for a brunch-worthy burger.
  • Change Up the Sauce: While the avocado-yogurt sauce is creamy and refreshing, you can also opt for other condiments like spicy mayo, classic ketchup, or a tangy barbecue sauce.
